Why rear brake is usually a lot smaller than front brake?

To many of those who just know how to ride but have no idea about the mechanics about how your bike functions, you might have a same question like I do: Why rear brake is usually a lot smaller than front brake?

For so many years I had a thought: the manufacture could cut their budget. However, that is totally wrong.
